Sony Cyber-shot H3 Review

sonycybershotdsch3.jpgThe Sony Cyber-shot H3 has a 1/2.5-inch CCD sensor with 8.1 MP and a 10x optical zoom. The rear LCD is a 2.5-inch screen and the camera has HDTV output with an optional cable or dock. Other features include image stabilization, face detection and more.

DPReview says the pros for the camera include reliable point and shoot performance, good image quality, good zoom and a good value among others. Cons for the camera include no wide angle, slow focus in low light, mediocre build quality, and optional stuff required for HDTV out.

The verdict for the camera is that it is an overall good camera for the money. The slow focus in low light isn’t good and you can find marginally better cameras in the price range. In the end it barely earns the recommended award.

Sony HDR-UX7 Camcorder Reviewed

Sony_HDR-UX7.jpgCamCorderInfo has reviewed the Sony HDR-UX7 camcorder, which retails for about $1000. The camcorder records to DVDs at a 1920 x 1080i resolution.

The camera lens has a focal length of 5.4-54mm that is equivalent to 40-400mm, 49-490mm, 40-400mm, and 37-370mm. The camera has an automatic lens shutter that covers the lens so no manual cap is needed.

In the end, the camera has the best controls of any Sony camcorder this year, but Sony used the AVCHD codec for the DVDs, which virtually ensures the DVDs won’t play in your DVD player. CamCorderInfo says this one is a no.

The lens is a 5x optical zoom Vario-Tessar with Carl Zeiss optics. With the 5 x zoom and huge LCD screen, you might think the cam would be large, but it is only 22mm thick.

The cam also allows you to view your images in HD on a large HDTV. You can set your picture slide shows to music and the camera comes with four tunes stored in the memory.

Also included is a wireless remote control and it ships with a 4GB Memory Stick PRO duo card. The cables you need for transferring video to your PC and watch video on your TV are included as well.

Sony Introduces New Touchscreen Digital Cameras

SONY_DSC-T200_R-CW.jpgSince the iPhone launched everything is going touchscreen. Sony recently announced a pair of new digital cameras that use a touchscreen to navigate menus. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T7200 retails for $400 and the DSC-T70 retails for $330.

The DSC-T70 has a 16:9 touchscreen that measures 3” and the touch sensitive nature of the screen allows you to navigate menus and adjust camera settings as well. The DSC-T200 has a 3.5” touchscreen.

The cool part of the touchscreen is that you use it to frame your shot, then you can touch where to focus and the cam takes care of the rest of the work. In addition to face detection, it also has smile detection. This trips the shutter as soon as the subject smiles, which is a great feature for parents trying to catch kids smiling.

Problems With Sony's Cybershots

Sony has some flawed cameras on the market. Some of their Cyber-shot compact digital cameras on sale from September 2003 to January 2005 may show distorted images or they may not function at all.

Four thousand out of 1 million models may be in need of repair. Not to mention they found condensation vulnerabilities in their other digital and video cameras. Not a good thing, huh?

Interestingly enough, Sony does not see a significant profit loss from these large number of defects.

The New Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T50 and DSC-N2

The new Sony DCS-T50 Sony always seems to be on top of the game when it comes to digital cameras and these two are no exception. The new DCS-T50 and DCS-N2 offer a wide variety of options that go beyond just snapping a picture. To start, the back of the cameras have an extra large screen with menu options to eliminate the need for a lot of buttons resulting in a sleeker design and better resolution for picture viewing. Another interesting feature is the new slide show display. You can now create slideshows right from the camera with your own music and different transitions.

“With digital photography, the social interaction that happens when people share their pictures has become as important as making great photographs,” said Phil Lubell, director of marketing for digital still cameras and photo printers at Sony Electronics. “Large, durable, scratch-resistant touch screens with enhanced photo-viewing capabilities are a means to ensuring that photo buffs get the maximum enjoyment out of using their cameras.”
